About Us

The Startup Pack Ltd was incorporated in October 2020 when the three founders Peter, Phil and John decided that they wanted to bring to life an idea that they had been contemplating for some time. All three work together in a finance brokerage business and a business planning/consultancy business both based in Northamptonshire.

It is fair to say that Peter, Phil and John would be described by their good friend Alan Price as ‘Silverpreneurs’. Between them they have years of hands-on experience working in Export, Business Management and Commercial Finance and are now using that experience in their current businesses.
An area that all three have held significant concerns about is the number of SME businesses that fail in their early years. The Office for National Statistics identifies the principal reasons behind SME business failures are:

  • Lack of Business Planning
  • Inexperienced management
  • Insufficient investment and working capital finance
  • Expending marketing budgets

In many cases SME owners are probably guilty of taking too much onto their own shoulders and do not either appreciate the support available or believe they cannot afford such support.

The creation of the Startup Pack and the support provided by our ‘Contributors’ is aimed at helping young companies in Northamptonshire to get off to the best start they can.

John Landers

John Landers

John is born and bred in Northampton and having part qualified as an accountant went out into industry working firstly in internal audit and then as a management accountant. Some forty year ago in 1981 John moved into the world of business finance and spent over 30 years supporting SME businesses with a range of asset-based lending solutions. Over the last 10 years John has continued to help SME business source funding but in a broker capacity, principally involved with National professional firms involved in Restructuring and Corporate Finance. John believes that far more new start businesses would succeed if they put proper plans in place in their early days by seeking advice and support, which in many cases ,they will find within their local business community – the concept of The Startup Pack is to encourage the directors/owners running their own company/business to reach out and put their new entities on sound foundations as early as possible.
Peter Douglas

Peter Douglas

Peter spent the early part of his working life with large International corporations. Having earned a degree in Business Studies whilst an apprentice with Massey Ferguson he then spent over 20 years in export sales and marketing with companies such a Mergenthaler-Linotype and De La Rue. He then stopped jetting around the World to spend time with his young family. He and his wife bought a village Post Office and learned much about running your own business. After some years they gave up the Post Office and Peter set up a number of businesses including Business Finance Services Ltd which he still runs. As Peter says, setting up The Startup Pack has presented us with interesting challenges but has given us the opportunity to give something back to the SME Business community.

Phil Jones

Phil has worked in a variety of business sectors including PLC, Pan European, privately owned, members and Co-operative. He has a successful commercial background in the hospitality, hotel, leisure, and sport industry. Phil’s career started in the travel industry initially working for major tour operators and then running his own travel business in London and Manchester. Phil moved to Northamptonshire in 1998 to take up the position of General Manager at Silverstone Racing Circuit. For a number of years Phil worked in Ireland running a number of hotels and golf courses including Citywest which at the time was the largest hotel, leisure, and conference centre in Europe. Phil also took up the position of Interim Chief Executive to launch the ferry service between the Republic of Ireland and Wales. More recently along with Peter and John he set up iBOSS – Independent Business Owners Support Services to mainly write Business Plans and mentor new start-up businesses. Like his fellow Directors he could see that there was a clear need to get good helpful information to these new businesses quickly and that was how The Startup Pack was created.

Yang Ren

Yang is a recent accounting graduate with valuable experience gained from working in various industries. Yang moved to the United Kingdom in 2017 to study undergraduate accounting and finance at the University of Northampton. Whilst studying for his degree, he gained his first work experience as an accounts assistant at Hubei Bank. Having obtained his first-class degree in 2019, Yang decided to stay in Northampton and pursue his master’s degree in accounting while working at the university as a student success mentor, facilitating student engagement and success. In the meantime, Yang started studying towards the ACCA qualification and assisted a start-up real estate business with their accounts and participated in a wide range of administrative tasks. Soon after submitting his final coursework, under the guidance of his supervisor he undertook a project on financial projection, which subsequently provided him with the opportunity to work with The Startup Pack family.
